Free, independent contractor license verification for North Carolina homeowners

Our Mission

NCContractorCheck exists to make contractor license verification simple and accessible for every North Carolina homeowner. North Carolina law requires general contractors to hold an active license from the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors (NCLBGC) for any project valued at $30,000 or more. Despite this requirement, finding and verifying license information has traditionally meant navigating a government portal that wasn't designed for quick lookups.

We built NCContractorCheck to solve that problem. Our directory indexes 76,160 contractor records from the NCLBGC public database and organizes them by city, trade classification, and license level — making it possible to verify a contractor's credentials in seconds rather than minutes.

Where Our Data Comes From

Every contractor record on NCContractorCheck originates from the official NCLBGC public portal at portal.nclbgc.org. We synchronize our database regularly to reflect new licenses, expirations, status changes, and updated contact information.

Our data processing pipeline includes:

  • Address normalization — standardizing city names and generating geographic slugs for consistent navigation
  • Trade classification mapping — grouping 30+ raw NCLBGC classifications into 16 user-friendly trade categories
  • License status tracking — distinguishing between active and expired licenses with clear visual indicators
  • Qualifier extraction — listing the licensed individuals responsible for supervising work under each license

We display both active and expired contractor licenses. Expired records remain valuable for homeowners researching a contractor's history — for example, to see when a license was first issued, what trade classifications it covered, or whether it has lapsed.

How to Use This Site

NCContractorCheck is designed for three main use cases:

1. Verify a Specific Contractor

Search by company name or license number using the search bar on any page. Each contractor's detail page shows their full NCLBGC record with a direct link to verify on the official portal.

2. Find Contractors in Your City

Browse by city to see all licensed contractors in your area, broken down by trade. Compare license levels, years of experience, and trade classifications side by side.

3. Research a Trade Specialty

Visit a trade page to see all NC-licensed contractors in that specialty, with city-by-city breakdowns and counts.

Editorial Standards

NCContractorCheck follows strict editorial principles:

  • Accuracy first — all license data comes directly from NCLBGC public records. We never fabricate or embellish contractor information.
  • No paid rankings — contractors are listed alphabetically or by relevance. No contractor can pay for higher placement.
  • Transparency about limitations — we clearly state when data may be outdated and always link to the official NCLBGC portal for real-time verification.
  • Clear status indicators — expired licenses are prominently marked with red badges. Out-of-state offices are flagged with amber indicators showing the actual office location.
